I started by tracking down two patterns that were designed with plus-sized women in mind: a pair of slacks and a tunic with an open neck and wide sleeves. The pants were easy enough, since I made them as normal and added the giant white applique. Luckily, the pants legs were wide enough for me to sew on the applique without worrying about accounting for pesky seams!
But who knew a simple tunic with only three pattern peices had such potential? From that one pattern, I drafted the base tunic with pointy bits, all the little annoying inserts, the appliques and the capelet. The only thing I had to add was a stand-up collar, which I lifted from a jacket pattern with a Mandarin collar.
The capelet's closure is craft foam, covered with fabric and glued in place. Along with Velcro to close it.
